Kanshitsu technique
For assembled plates
1. Plaster mold.
2. Demolding process.
Apply a mixture of water-soluble glue and mud.
Water-soluble glue is a mixture of rice paste and water.
3. Apply "sabi".
"Sabi" is mixture of urushi, mud and water.
4. Polishing of "sabi".
After curing of "3.", polishing with a grindstone.
"3. & 4." repeat 3 sets.
5. Apply "makiji".
"Makiji" is after applying urushi as an glue, sprinkle powdery diatomaceous earth.
Wait for curing and repeat “makiji” 3 times.
6. Paste Japanese paper.
A mixture of urushi, rice paste and water is used for the glue.
Paste 2 sheets and wait for hardened. A total of 4 japanese paper are pasted.
7. Linen cloth paste.
Mix urushi and rice paste. Use it as a glue and paste Linen cloth.
Paste 1 sheet and wait for hardened. A total of 5 Linen cloth are pasted.
However, after pasting the 4th sheet, the process of "8. & 9." is in between.
8. Making "tatamitsuki".
Mix urushi, flour and water. Use it as a glue and paste hemp string.
“Tatamitsuki” is one of the specifications behind the plate.
In the case of urushi, by reducing the ground contact surface,
the area where scratched behind the plate is reduced.
9. Shaping "tatamitsuki".
After curing, shape by polishing & apply "kiriko".
"Kiriko" is mixture of urushi, "sabi" and diatomaceous earth.
10. Linen cloth paste.
Continuation of "7.".
11. Japanese paper paste.
Paste Japanese paper in the same way as "6.".
12. Apply "makiji".
"Makiji" in the same way as "5.".
13. Demolding.
Immerse in water and dissolve the water-soluble glue applied in "2.''.
14. Edge shaping.
Sharpen the edges of the plate.
15. Adjust "tatamituki".
Polish using frosted glass. Adjust the back flat.
16. Adjust the shape of the back & edges.
Sharpen the backside with a grindstone.
The grindstone used is “nagurado”.
17. Filter urushi.
Remove trash by filtering urushi with Japanese paper.
18. Apply urushi.
Apply urushi prepared in "17." using a special brush.
The name of urushi to be applied is “kuroroiro-urushi”.
19. Urushi polishing.
Polish the hardened urushi with special charcoal.
"18. & 19." repeat 4 or 5 sets.
20. Rub urushi.
Rub urushi very thinly using absorbent cotton.
Repeat 4 or 5 times.
21. Final polish.
Apply a little abrasive to the hand and polish the urushi.
This finishing method is called “roiroshiage”.
22. Complete.
